when the train came

"Listen, I’m not entirely comfortable being human.

They say laughter is the best medicine
so I wrapped my arms up in swing set chains
just to see if I still have funny bones
I do.
They are aching now

like a foot
lost to a trap.
I’ve paid for these legs with my mother.
As soon as my stalk was long enough, I ran.
And though it is good to be here with you tonight
I’m still running."

- "When the Train Came,"  Buddy Wakefield
- Painting: "Seated Woman," Egon Schiele, 1913
